Even If You Are Not Itching, You Could Still Have Lice

Yes, you can have lice and never get an itchy scalp! Although an itchy scalp is the number one reported symptom and really the way most people realize they have lice, it is not guaranteed that you will feel itchiness. Here is why.

Delayed Allergic Reaction
Many people think itchiness is caused by louse bites. However, the reason you feel itchiness is actually an allergic reaction caused by louse saliva. Some people take longer to develop sensitivity, meaning they may not itch immediately or at all. So you could have a lice infestation, never experience itchiness, and have no idea!

Low Infestation Level
Along with a lack of an allergic reaction to the louse saliva, your infestation may be new, meaning there are not many lice on your head yet. Any irritation may be minimal or go unnoticed.

Varying Sensitivity
Some people are simply less reactive to lice bites and may not experience itching, even with a significant infestation. No two people are the same, so their lice infestations wont be either!

Frequent Washing
Another factor that can affect an itchy scalp is frequent hair washing. Regular hair washing might remove louse saliva before it triggers an allergic response, reducing the chance of itching. It’s important to understand that washing your hair does not get rid of lice. Lice eggs are cemented onto your hair, and lice grab hold of your hair and are difficult to remove.

Misinterpretation of Symptoms
Someone may have lice but attribute any mild discomfort to dandruff, dry scalp, or another condition rather than a lice infestation.

So, if you can have lice without itching, what should you do? Our recommendation: frequent lice checks, lice prevention oil and spray, and keeping your hair in pulled-back hairstyles (especially if you are around kids!)
