Halloween Lice Prevention Tips
Spooky season is in full swing, and our advice is to keep the scariness to the holiday and not a lice outbreak with these Halloween lice prevention tips.
Discuss With Your Children
During all of the excitement, it can be easy for kids to forget their lice-prevention tips. Give your children a gentle reminder that lice is spread through head-to-head contact, which can be very common with shared Halloween items. While you are talking with your children remind them that lice does not mean you are dirty, it is very common and if they do get a lice infestation it is nothing to be ashamed of.
Avoiding Trying On Shared Costumes
Resuing costumes during this time of year is a great way to save money and be eco-friendly, but it can also be an easy way to get lice. If you are borrowing a costume from a friend, or visiting the thrift store to find elements of a costume, always take a moment to check it for any signs of lice, or avoid trying these items on if possible. Lice can live about 2 days without being on someone’s scalp, so if you do get a costume that has been previously worn, leave it for at least two days before trying it on.
Use The Bag Method
Once all of the Halloween excitement is over, take your child’s costume and keep it in a bag for a few days after Halloween. On the off-chance their costume has lice you will not want to spread it to others in the house. Lice can’t survive more than a few days without blood so this should kill all of the lice before you handle the costume again.
Use Lice Prevention Methods
One of the easiest ways to prevent lice is to keep your child’s hair in a ponytail, pulled back and off from their face. Couple a pulled-back hairstyle with our lice prevention spray and you have significantly reduced the chances that your child will get lice this spooky season!
Check for Lice Before and After
Staying vigilant is one of the best ways to catch an outbreak early on. Check all of your children for lice a few days before Halloween. This can also be the time that you remind them about lice prevention strategies. If you find lice before Halloween you can treat it before it becomes a much larger problem. We also recommend checking their hair a few days after Halloween for the same reasons. Finding lice early on will be a lot less costly and stressful for everyone involved.
Hopefully, your child is only bringing candy home this Halloween. But if they do bring home these creepy crawlers, don’t worry! They only seem scary but in reality, they are more of a nuisance than a real danger.
